Newport Cannabis Co. is the only licensed cannabis dispensary in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, and the only one on Aquidneck Island! You’ll find us at 1637 W. Main Road, right on the Route 114 corridor. We’re open seven days a week for adult recreational-use customers, 21 and over, and for registered medical patients. Walk in and talk to a budtender, order ahead online for pickup, swing through the drive-thru pickup window, or have your cannabis delivered anywhere in Rhode Island.
Rhode Island has fewer than a dozen licensed cannabis retailers in the entire state, and only one of them is on Aquidneck Island. That means Newport Cannabis Co. in Portsmouth is the place where the whole community of Aquidneck island shops. The next closest licensed options are off-island in Providence and Warwick, a 40-minute drive each way.
Our customers are Portsmouth residents picking up on the way home from work, Newport locals who’d rather drive 20 minutes north than an hour to Providence, Middletown families five minutes down West Main Road, and visitors in town for a wedding, a regatta, a festival weekend or a week on the beach.
It also means we take the responsibility seriously. Being the only shop on the island isn’t a reason to coast, it’s the reason our budtenders take the time to actually talk you through what you’re buying, and the reason we keep pricing competitive and specials rotating rather than resting on being the only game in town.
We’re on West Main Road (Route 114) in the middle of Portsmouth’s main commercial corridor, with our own parking lot and a drive-thru pickup window. If you know the Newport Car Museum, we’re a few blocks south of it on the same road.
Both of the toll-free bridges onto Aquidneck Island land in Portsmouth. If you’re coming from Bristol, Warren, Tiverton, Fall River or Providence, Rhode Island you enter the Aquidneck through our town, and you don’t pay a toll to do it. The Newport Bridge from Jamestown is the only tolled crossing.

Rhode Island legalized adult-use cannabis in May 2022, and licensed retail sales started that December. Here’s what actually applies to you:
Portsmouth is the oldest and quietest end of Aquidneck Island and one of Rhode Island’s four original settlements, founded in 1638 by a group of religious dissenters that included Anne Hutchinson. It’s also the biggest of the island’s three towns by land area and the only one that never built a downtown. Instead it grew as a scatter of neighborhoods around ferry landings, farms and meeting houses, and it still feels that way: more shoreline than main street, more open field than storefront.
Portsmouth runs one of the more serious farmland preservation programs in New England, and you can taste the result. Greenvale Vineyards pours on the banks of the Sakonnet River with live jazz in the tasting room. Escobar’s Highland Farm is a working dairy that turns its fields into one of the state’s best corn mazes every fall. Between them are the stone walls, hayfields and horse paddocks that make the drive up West Main Road feel like leaving the island’s tourist half behind.
Portsmouth is more water than land (36 of its 59 square miles) with Narragansett Bay on one side, the Sakonnet River on the other and Mount Hope Bay to the north. Sandy Point and McCorrie Point are the town beaches. Teddy’s Beach down in Island Park is the small neighborhood spot with a boat ramp and no crowd. Five marinas and more than a thousand private moorings mean half the town is on the water by mid-June.
Here’s the thing locals love telling visitors: the Newport International Polo Series isn’t in Newport. It’s played at Glen Farm, right here in Portsmouth, on Saturdays from June through September, tailgating, coolers, leashed dogs, and the traditional divot stomp at halftime. Green Animals Topiary Garden, the oldest topiary garden in the country, is on Cory’s Lane in Portsmouth too, even though it’s marketed under the Newport Mansions banner. And the Newport Car Museum sits on West Main Road just north of us. Three of the area’s best-known attractions carry Newport’s name and Portsmouth’s address.
On August 29, 1778, American and French forces fought the Battle of Rhode Island across what is now Portsmouth, holding a final line at Butts Hill Fort before withdrawing north across the Bristol Ferry narrows. The earthworks are still there, the largest surviving Revolutionary War fortification in the state, on the National Register and under active restoration. Twelve minutes over the Mount Hope Bridge, Bristol throws the oldest continuous Fourth of July celebration in America, running since 1785.

Rhode Island law allows adults 21 and over to purchase and possess up to one ounce of cannabis, or the equivalent in concentrate, at a time. Registered medical patients have separate, higher limits.
No. You do not need a medical card to shop with us. Any adult 21 or over with a valid government-issued photo ID can buy from our adult-use menu. If you are a registered medical patient, bring your registry ID card as well and you will be exempt from Rhode Island’s state and local cannabis excise taxes.
No. Cannabis remains illegal under federal law, and carrying it across any state line is a federal offense even when both states have legal adult-use markets. Anything you buy in Portsmouth should stay in Rhode Island.
Yes. We deliver across the entire state of Rhode Island. Local deliveries have a $30 order minimum and a $5 fee, and statewide deliveries have a $45 order minimum and a $10 fee. Delivery is free on every order over $150.

No. Smoking or vaporizing cannabis is prohibited anywhere that prohibits tobacco smoking, and individual cities and towns may add further restrictions. There are no licensed consumption lounges in Rhode Island, so plan to consume in a private residence.
